Description

Terra Consultancy is looking for experienced and dedicated Specialist Mentors to address the needs of students with mental health difficulties to overcome barriers in higher education they may encounter. These candidates are sought to provide a complementary service to existing support encouraging students to achieve full potential.

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • To support allocated students on a 1:1 basis with the practical impact of their mental health difficulties on their academic experience
  • To deliver focused interventions to build confidence and motivate your students to attend their timetabled sessions and undertake the independent study required to complete their course
  • To have knowledge and appreciation of the range of activities, courses, opportunities, organisations and individuals that could be drawn upon to provide additional support for students and encourage independence
  • To work closely with the provider to be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the impact support has on student attendance, retention, achievement and progression.
  • Keep accurate records of work done with students
  • Make effective use of supervision to ensure good practice in providing safe and effective support.

 Essential Qualification entails a membership of at least ONE professional body:

  • Association of Child Psychotherapists
  • BABCP accreditation
  • BACP individual or MBACP
  • British Psychoanalytic Council – under a member institution
  • British Psychological Society Chartered Member (CPsychol)/IAPT register/ Graduate Member (MBPsS) AND also PG qualification in Psychology or Mental Health
  • COSCA accredited member
  • FDAP (NCAC)
  • General Medical Council (GMC) – Psychiatry
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (Arts Therapist/ Occupational Therapist/ Practitioner Psychologist/ Social worker in England)
  • IACP accredited member
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) – Mental Health Nurse/ community Mental Health nurse / Psychiatric Nurse
  • Social worker body for Scotland SSSC/ Wales CCWales/ NI (NISCC)
  • UKCP full clinical individual member
  • UMHAN member

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • An awareness of possible stigma and discrimination around people with mental health conditions
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professional experience of supporting individuals with mental health conditions in an educational setting
  • Confidence in working independently with learners

Holds a degree; AND Comprehensive training in adult autism in any ONE of the following:

  • All 5 NAS core autism online training modules (Understanding Autism; Autism and Communication; Autism and Sensory Experience; Autism, Stress and Anxiety; Autism: Supporting families)
  • NAS tutor-led course ‘Understanding Autism’ or ‘Introduction to autism and the SPELL framework’
  • Other training, including at a HE institution, delivered by an appropriately qualified trainer (a qualified trainer from a recognised organisation/charity; or a trainer who can demonstrate a relevant qualification in autism) 
  • Holds a PG Certificate in Autism

  • An awareness of possible stigma and discrimination around people with ASD conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to recognise your own limitations, to establish and maintain boundaries within a professional role and confidence to refer to other services where appropriate.
  • Confidence in working independently with learners

  • The professional association of teachers of students with specific learning difficulties (PATOSS)
  • British Dyslexia Association (BDA)
  • Dyslexia Guild
  • Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSH/ADSHE)
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Experience of working with clients affected by Dyslexia and the provision of tools to facilitate learning
  • An awareness of possible stigma and discrimination around people with Dyslexia
  • Excellent communication skills: fluency in English, good listening skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to recognise your own limitations, to establish and maintain boundaries within a professional role and confidence to refer to other services where appropriate

MOBILITY TRAINERS

Description:

Terra Consultancy is looking for enthusiastic and experienced Mobility Trainers to support visually impaired students with their safe mobility and orientation around their campus/learning environment.

As part of this role, successful applicants will be expected to carry out an in-depth assessment of the campus/learning environment incorporating the specific needs of the student and any current visual aids they may use. Trainers will then develop a support programme, and coach the student in site orientation and in learning safe routes around the campus/learning environment.

Essential criteria for candidates include:

  • Relevant specialist qualification/s in habilitation studies or rehabilitation work to Diploma level as a minimum.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication skills for both liaison with educational institutes and student clients.

The position is for an immediate start and will require some travel. Travel expenses will be fully reimbursed.

Description:

Terra Consultancy is looking for experienced and enthusiastic  Assistive Technology Trainers. The  job is rewarding  and suitable for those passionate about helping disable people embrace new skills. 

The role may encompass but is not confined to:

  • Teach software strategies to improve time management and organisational skills
  • Implementing AT Study skills techniques including: Mind mapping, memory techniques, concentration techniques, note-taking techniques, assignment planning, essay writing skills, research method skills, proof-reading and revision techniques.
  • To work with learners to identify and help overcome specific difficulties via coaching to enable self-esteem changes and confidence building.
  • To help facilitate reasonable adjustments in order to ensure support is delivered in an accessible manner.
  • To complete and return all relevant paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.

Desirable:

  • To be educated to degree level
  • Have experience of working with disabled people
